Tucson Gem Shows Day 5

Posted on

Today we discovered a fine mineral specimen show: The Westward Look Mineral Show. There were SO many amazing specimens and while photos were generally discouraged, we were still able to photograph a few great pieces!

Raw amethyst crystals (below). The word Amethyst comes from the Greek ‘amethystos’, meaning, “not drunken”, as it was thought to protect against inebriation. Amethysts were traditionally associated with the ancient Roman fertility and wine god, Bacchus, and the word amethyst in German is ‘bacchusstein’- the Bacchus Stone. Amethyst is believed to bring emotional stability and strength, especially in times of pain of grief. It is the soothing stone of sobriety and is helpful in dispelling addictions and destructive behaviors of all kinds. Light colored amethyst is associated with the crown chakra. Amethyst is the birthstone for February.

Amethyst comes in a variety of shades from the royal saturated purple you see above to a pale lavender hue and even pale purplish-pink, seen below.

Below are some examples of the exquisite mineral specimens available at the Westward Look Mineral Show.

Due to mine availability and new mineral discoveries, every year in Tucson there are certain gems that are more prevalent than others and availability and quality changes from year to year. We already discussed the plentitude of Tourmaline this year in Tucson in the Day2 blog post. We have also seen a lot of Morganite at the shows this year in a variety of qualities, shapes and hues. Below (left) is a specimen of raw morganite with aquamarine growing in the center. Morganite and Aquamarine are both in the beryl family, so they grow together and are essentially the same stone in different colors. The left photo is a strand of rough faceted morganite we purchased!

Morganite is s high vibrational stone and the universal stone of unconditional love. Morganite opens and heals the Heart Chakra, helping to overcome fear, resentment and anger, and in recognizing unfulfilled emotional needs and feelings which have gone unexpressed. It also reveals defense mechanisms that are fear-based and make meaningful relationships difficult, thereby creating resistance to healing and transformation. Morganite stabilizes the emotional field, activating and energizing loving thoughts and actions, and brings in wisdom and calmness of mind. It increases the ability to accept loving words and actions from others, and releases the attachment to old relationships. Read more about morganite here...
