Gemstone Spotlight: All About Pearls
What: A rough grain of sand is transformed slowly over-time growing inside the shell of a mollusk into a object of great value and beauty. I say mollusk because it can be on oyster, such as in the case with saltwater pearls like Tahitian pearls, which are very rare OR it can be a freshwater shellfish with a hard shell.
How: The mollusk detects a foreign object in its shell, such as a piece of another shell or a grain of sand. To protect itself it slowly coats the object with a substance called nacre. Over time the object grow and grows with layers of nacre and a tiny pearl starts to form.
Mollusks with different colored shells produce different colored pearls i.e. black lipped oysters produce black pearls.
Metaphysical: The luminescent pearl symbolizes innocence, purity and honesty. The gemstone of the pure of heart, pearls can stimulate your femininity and help with self acceptance. They can lift your spirits and make you feel calm and beautiful. Pearls are the birthstone for June.
